Mô tả công việc Brief description |
Matt Eremita of South Windsor High School is used to doing double duty, so maybe his intentions in college — a double major in history and pre-med at Trinity starting in the fall — are no surprise.
Eremita, a two-sport captain, is the 2008 winner of the Bo Kolinsky Team Player Scholarship, awarded each year by The Courant in honor of its longtime high school sports editor who died in December 2003.
"Becoming a doctor has been my dream since the third grade: I am a very healthy, active person, and have a natural passion for helping others. During high school, I also have developed a passion for history. I believe that it is important to learn about the history of other cultures in today's globalizing world," Eremita wrote in his essay when applying for the scholarship.

Chí tiết Vị trí Full details of position |
Eremita was captain of the cross country and basketball teams at South Windsor.
"Matt is both a team player and a dynamic leader ... his dedication to academics and the community is first and foremost, a quality far beyond his years," wrote boys basketball coach Pete Anthony in a letter of recommendation.
Eremita ranked 11th in a class of 392 with a 3.70 GPA. His community service included volunteering for "Instructors of the Handicapped," an organization designed to teach the physically and mentally challenged to swim and enjoy the water. Eremita, a lifeguard all through high school, worked with an autistic 8-year-old boy.
As a dual high school captain, Eremita doubled his efforts.
"I felt it was my responsibility to help prepare both teams for successful seasons," said Eremita, one of 24 candidates for the scholarship. "I made tons of phone calls, some to harass my cross country teammates to be ready for early-morning practices, others to my basketball teammates to help my dad organize our summer league team.
"I like to think that I was my teammates' moral compass, pointing them in the right direction and ceaselessly reminding them of our goals. But, then again, my teammates may have conceded to my persistent calls just to stop my pestering."
Eremita will receive the $1,000 scholarship Monday at the Connecticut Sports Writers' Alliance's Bo Kolinsky Scholarship Golf Tournament at Lake of Isles Golf Club in North Stonington.
