Move over Festival of Trees, Friday night's Gals, Glam and Glitz event will be a festival of opportunity.
The girls' night out gathering at the Hagerty Center is part of the Zonta Club of Traverse City's annual Festival of Trees fundraising celebration.
Gals, Glam and Glitz will celebrate four area women selected by the Zonta Club to receive Opportunity for Change scholarships to further their college education and improve their lives. During the event, the women will be featured in short films about their lives and also model their complete makeover courtesy of the club and Impres Salon.

Scholarship recipients from this term are Lauren Jackson, Rachelle Johnson, Melissa Lohman and Michelle Stark.
Each with a compelling story as they return to college, the women applied for the scholarship through either NMC's Bridge Program or the Women's Resource Center. The amount of money granted differed in each case and can be applied to tuition, fees and books. If a recipient already has federal aid, the money may be used for child care or transportation costs related to attending classes.
Kingsley resident Johnson is starting college as a mother of two young children. After high school, she put aside dreams of college for work and other commitments. Starting classes just last spring toward a major in accounting, she was thrilled to receive the Zonta grant to help pay for her second semester.
"I was a little surprised I was chosen, it was a 'Wow!' definitely," said Johnson, who estimates she had been away from formal schooling about seven years.
Having a makeover thrown into the deal was icing on the cake for these busy women juggling families, jobs and college.
"This spring as a committee we thought we should add the makeovers for recipients and present them to show what we do and why," said Marsha Dew, co-chair of the event with Peg Jonkhoff. "Give them a chance to show what they can be when starting a new life."
Thanks to Impres Salon, the women received a highlight, color and haircut ahead of the Gals, Glam and Glitz. The day of the event, the salon will also provide a manicure and a professional makeup session. During the evening, the women will come down the runway together modeling a new outfit and showcasing possibility in their lives.
"It's really nice because usually you don't stop to take that time and it was a great experience," said Johnson of her turn in the salon's chair last week. "It's a wonderful treat to be pampered, just great to have a day not to worry about work or kids."
Since they began awarding scholarships in 1996, the Zonta Club of Traverse City has give away more than $100,000 to area women. Money raised at events such as the Festival of Trees helps provides funds for one or more scholarships each college term.
The Zonta Opportunity for Change committee reviews applications received from the Bridge Program and the Women's Resource Center and assess applicants for potential success in their chosen academic programs.
The scholarships dovetail with Zonta's mission to increase the status of women.
"We would like to help women who are going back to school so that they can get a job and eventually support themselves and support their children," said Deb Morrow, chair of the scholarship committee.
The Gals, Glam and Glitz event will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at the Hagerty Center in Traverse City.
