Brief description |
In the inaugural year of a scholarship program, the Staten Island Council of Churches recently awarded $4,000 to eight students, making the college experience just a little more manageable.
The scholarship was available to high school students wishing to further their education. The committee was initially funded by two memorial bequests, and was named "The Calvin Harris and Mary Sterner Scholarship Fund." It was chaired by long-time Council Treasurer, Wilbur Sterner.

Applicants were required to be a member of a church or an organization belonging to the Staten Island Council of Churches and be furthering post-high school education at an accredited institution.
Recipients included Colleen Siuzdak, now a freshman at Hunter College, studying journalism. Miss Siuzdak, a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, participated in the churches Right to Life committee and taught CCD classes. She graduated from St. John Villa Academy where she received Outstanding Academic and Christian service awards.
Other recipients were: Wolde Archer, Christ Church New Brighton; Margaret J. Carles, St. Andrew's church; Katie Anne Guidi, Church of the Ascension; Michael J. Hess, Jr., Messiah Lutheran Church; Gary B. Mitchell, Jr., Olivet Presbyterian Church; Megan Soto, Christian Pentecostal Church and Alexander Valenti, Lamb of God Prayer Group.
